I have known for many years that my calling was to education. I am dedicated to fulfilling my goals and anticipate achieving all that is necessary to become an efficient and productive teacher.     When I graduated from high school in 2006, I attended UMPI for one year and then moved to NMCC for another year.  It was apparent at that time that I was not ready for the demands of college.  My parents were disappointed but told me that it was my decision.  They also made it clear that I would have to assume some financial responsibilities.  Shortly thereafter, I became an Education Technician at our local school district in Ashland. I did this job for 8+ years before making a career changed, that would not last. I knew what I wanted to do and that was be in education. I was hired at the Caribou school district in 2018 as a Special Education Technician and fell in love with teaching even more than before. At the end of 2018, due to budget issues my position was cut and that is when I decided that I wanted and needed to get a college education.     I enrolled at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and decided I wanted to become a teacher.  Working with children was something I had always enjoyed. I am always amazed by the things children do and say and the enjoyment I experience when I am with them.  Helping to positively influence lives and helping them to mature is extremely gratifying.  Soon after my decision was made, and my initial classes were taken, I began visiting schools.       My experiences in school have ranged from elation to frustration.  I enjoy the process of learning. I was told that the frustration I am experiencing would strengthen my abilities to be an effective teacher.  I will empathize with the struggles my student’s face because I have also struggled.  Essentially, I will continue to strive to do the very best that I can.     The first student teaching practica that I participated in affirmed my choice of career.  Going to school on the first day, I felt both excited and scared.  I learned a great deal in the weeks I have been able to observe.   Some of the things I saw made me sad; others made me very happy.  I know that I will always keep a positive attitude in both good and bad times.  During my practica, I came to realize the importance of a structured environment for students with disabilities.  Creating a structured environment will assist my students in knowing what to expect.  It would basically prepare them for a positive learning experience.  A positive attitude from me will, hopefully, foster a positive attitude in my students.  A positive attitude on both our parts would, I believe, raise the student’s self-esteem, which would ultimately raise the confidence level.  Leading the students to obtain correct responses, initially, would have a positive impact on the student’s attitude towards learning.     One of the most difficult undertakings of an educator is getting the child to want to learn.  I feel that, as a teacher, it will be my responsibility to continue to find ways to motivate my students.  If one strategy does not work, I will find one that does.  Realizing children are unique and need to develop at their own pace will foster developmental growth in the areas of social, emotional, and intellectual needs.  Providing programs that focus on the process of learning will help children enjoy successful learning experiences and will encourage not just learning for school, but for life as well.     My classroom will be arranged to offer challenging learning choices at a range of developmental needs.  I want to develop in my students a sense of independence and a positive self-image.  Children need guidance, understanding, and age-appropriate limits to help them function in their world.  I feel that it would benefit my students if, as a group, we could agree upon rules and routines for the classroom.  In addition, I would like the students to collaborate with me to develop rewards for appropriate behaviors and consequences for behaviors that are hurtful or inappropriate.  The consistency and limits set by us, as a group will foster a sense of belonging in the students.  With guidance, encouragement and positive feedback, my students will experience cognitive, social and emotional success.     A key component in the learning process of students is demonstrating relevancy of new information.  It is my goal to present to students, information they will find necessary and useful in their day-to-day lives.  I intend to assess and build my students’ knowledge base in order to give them a firm foundation for future learning experiences.  Equally important is incorporating new information to be learned into all subject areas.  The result will be the consistency and repetition that students with disabilities need.  The repetition will aid the student in retention of new material, which will generalize into all academic areas.     Not all students learn in the same manner and for this reason I will provide students with a variety of learning activities that cover a range of learning styles.  Small group and individual work will be practiced in my classroom as well.  Working within a group will occur throughout student’s lives and it is important they understand the dynamics of working with others.  With guided practice and clear demonstrations students will experience personal and group success.     Graduation will not conclude my education; rather I view my day-to-day experiences with students as an ongoing learning process.  Relating information to students to excite them to learn will be an ongoing challenge.  However, I know that my education and training will prepare me for whatever the future might hold.  Life is a true learning experience; one must never stop learning.  The fact that I will be entrusted with the lives of special children is a great responsibility, and I feel that I can– and will–rise to the occasion.
